Eureka Candidate Races 2010

Following our spring edition’s candidate questionnaire we received numerous requests to put some questions to candidates in Eureka’s
municipal elections due to the countywide significance of two specific planning projects in the greater Eureka area.

For these races we asked two simple questions and asked candidates to answer "yes" or "no" to both questions. We also allowed for brief comments on each question. The rate of response was not as good as for the County races, we had one "No Comment" and two "No Response". And despite our repeated requests, some candidates were unwilling to state a clear position. We hope you will find this feature helpful in deciding who is the candidate most likely to support your rights.

Eureka Mayor Candidates

A ) Marshall Spalding

1. Do you support the Ridgewood Village (Forster-Gill) development that would add 1,442 homes on 143 acres in the Cutten area?
– Failed to respond.

2. Do you support the upcoming Eureka ballot measure (Measure N) that would change the zoning of the Balloon Tract to allow for a mixed-use project that would include retail, residential, light industrial, and wetlands? – Failed to respond.
– Failed to respond.

B ) Frank J. Jager

1. Do you support the Ridgewood Village (Forster-Gill) development that would add 1,442 homes on 143 acres in the Cutten area?
– I do not support the Forster-Gill development as it is now planned.

2. Do you support the upcoming Eureka ballot measure (Measure N) that would change the zoning of the Balloon Tract to allow for a mixed-use project that would include retail, residential, light industrial, and wetlands?
– In regards to Measure N I do support that ballot measure. I was one of the Council members who voted to put it on the ballot.

C ) Peter Lavallee

1. Do you support the Ridgewood Village (Forster-Gill) development that would add 1,442 homes on 143 acres in the Cutten area?
–– Failed to state a clear position "yes /no" but offered this comment: I am undecided on the Ridgewood Village development. I am concerned about traffic impacts I believe are not adequately addressed in the EIR. On the other hand, I favor the proposed inclusion of undeveloped space , an element of the project not mentioned in your question. The traffic issue will need to be addressed before I could offer my support to the project.

2. Do you support the upcoming Eureka ballot measure (Measure N) that would change the zoning of the Balloon Tract to allow for a mixed-use project that would include retail, residential, light industrial, and wetlands?
Failed to state a clear position "yes /no" but offered this comment: I have no position on Measure N. I have always supported a full cleanup of the property to get the best possible project for the community.

Eureka City Council – Ward 1 Candidates

A )Marian Brady

1. Do you support the Ridgewood Village (Forster-Gill) development that would add 1,442 homes on 143 acres in the Cutten area?
– No I do not support the Forster Gill project. With our current housing market, nearly failing Bayshore Mall, adding over 1,400 houses and a mall size shopping center on the edges of Eureka is bad planning.

2. Do you support the upcoming Eureka ballot measure (Measure N) that would change the zoning of the Balloon Tract to allow for a mixed-use project that would include retail, residential, light industrial, and wetlands?
– Yes, I totally support Measure N. It gives voters an opportunity to make their wishes known, taking a direct role in how their city develops and sending a message to those city and county elected
officials who wish to derail the project completely.

B )Larry Glass

1. Do you support the Ridgewood Village (Forster-Gill) development that would add 1,442 homes on 143 acres in the Cutten area?
– No, I do not support this parasitic development and it’s faulty EIR. The traffic from this project will overwhelm Eureka’s infrastructure and, the development will siphon off city sales tax dollars.

2. Do you support the upcoming Eureka ballot measure (Measure N) that would change the zoning of the Balloon Tract to allow for a mixed-use project that would include retail, residential, light industrial, and wetlands?
Failed to state a clear position "yes /no" but offered this comment: I voted to place this on the ballot, I support public’s right to choose.
